The Mokelumne Wilderness encompasses 105,165 acres of mostly rugged terrain in the watershed of the Mokelumne River in the central Sierra Nevada. With a Low elevation of 4,000 feet near Salt Springs Reservoir the Mokelumne spans several life zones. The zones range from live oak, chaparral, and ponderosa pine in deep granite canyons, through glacially carved hanging valleys, to the sub-alpine and alpine forest zones, and volcanic peaks above 10,000 feet at the Sierra Crest near Carson Pass. Although much of the Mokelumne is rugged and remote, the Carson Pass Management Area just south of Carson Pass is easily accessible and popular.
