These two wilderness areas are beautiful, pristine wild lands in the heart of the Klamath National Forest. These unique places are available to anyone who enjoys unspoiled nature, quiet and solitude. The Marble Mountain Wilderness contains 227,000 acres of mountainous terrain, diverse vegetation, and high elevation lakes and streams. It was named for Marble Mountain, a monolith of white limestone standing 6,880 feet above sea level. Boulder Peak, 8,229 feet, is the highest point in the wilderness; the mouth of Wooley Creek at the wilderness boundry is the lowest point at 640 feet. The Russian Wilderness, just a few miles southeast of the "Marbles", is a 12,000-acre area. This wilderness encompasses the Russian Mountains, a high craggy granitic ridge with prominent peaks and U-shaped valleys. Elevations range from 8,196 feet at Russian Peak to the eastern boundry at 5,080 feet. |
