This 581,000 area is the largest wilderness area in California, and is located in the Inyo and Sierra National Forests. The area was named for the prominent naturalist and environmentalist. It is the most-visited wilderness in the state. Elevations range from 4,000 feet to over 14,000 feet at Mount Whitney. The Pacific Crest and John Muir Trails run through this area. |
