Ranging in elevation from a few hundred feet to over 10,000 feet above sea level, the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument includes ten distinct biotic communities. Each community is influenced by changes in altitude, temperature, and precipitation and contains unique associations of wildlife. All ten are featured in this guide. Fifteen signature species of plants and animals were chosen to best represent each biotic community. Travelling up by car, foot, horse, or tramway will allow you to experience all of these communitiies in a single day. This is one of the special features of the Monument. |
