This collection of papers on the Western Pueblo societies, inspired originally by a collection of tihu (kachina carvings), deals not only with the meanings and functions of the kachina, but with the broader aspects of the various societies. Included- an overview of Hopi prehistory, a discussion of how Great Basin social organization and culture may be related to those of the Hop, showing that by drawing on archaeological ind linguistic data of the region, it may be possible to gain understanding of the shift from hunting and gathering to horticultural subsistence patterns. |
