Desolation Sound, the beautiful and popular cruising ground north and east of Malaspina Peninsula, was set aside in 1973 as the largest marine park in southern British Columbia. To today's visitors, the name Desolation Sound evokes a place of calm, clear water, lush scenery, and wildlife such as beaver and bald eagles. During summer, some of the warmest waters along the coast can be found within the sound—ideal for swimming, snorkeling, diving, canoeing, and kayaking. Oysters and clams can be found in some sheltered bays and lagoons, and sportfishing is good. On the eastern horizon, the snowcapped peaks of the Coast Mountains provide stunning photo opportunities. Desolation Sound is a marvelous place to explore. |
